Socks

Socks, our beautiful HANDSOME gentleman with his adorable socks (hence the name! Socks and his 2 siblings were abandoned heartlessly, shoved in a box and left to die next to a UB tuckshop with the one of the worst cases of cat flu we had encountered. With lots of medical care and TLC they ALL made full recoveries.

A funny thing about Socks; most people who came to visit the catteries to adopt saw Socks as the more "conventionally" pretty sibling in the litter of 3. His sister Nala had a damaged eye from an old untreated injury, so the sweet lady who chose her did so thinking she'd have a hard time getting adopted due to her "imperfect" eye and didn't worry about Socks getting a home cause of how pretty he is.

Sock's brother Ricky, contracted the herpes virus before having access to vaccination (earning him the nickname of Snotty Ricky 😂) meaning he would continue to have flare ups here and there (easily treatable with supplements and meds every now and them and NON transmissible to humans or vaccinated animals). Ricky went straight to his unknowing future mom and sneezed on her - love at first sneeze? 🤧

But once again, Socks said goodbye to a sibling and patiently hung back being overlooked as "he's so handsome he will get a home easily" - while we are thrilled his siblings got their happily ever after, Socks proves a very sad and strange happening in the world of adoption.

Most animal lovers and rescuers will be drawn towards the animals with visible "different" characteristics fearing that they will stay unadopted and be overlooked by most for things like missing limbs, visual impairments and the likes (which is equally true and sad that some people only want to adopt "perfect" animals). While we love and highly encourage this unconditional love and celebrate adoptions for our "differently abled" rescues... we do backflips for adoptions of babies with no eyes and 3 legs but Socks, Socks gets walked past because "He's so handsome he will get a home easily" - well, 2 years later... Socks is still so handsome, but no... not enough to have been adopted yet 💔

While foster care is full of love and quality time, nothing beats a real forever family and home to call your own. Socks has become shy and not as playful because he gets walked past, some say he's "too big" or "too old" but realistically he is 2.5 years old and cats can live up to 15years on average! His life is only just beginning and the sweetest part about adopting a slightly "older" cat is that they have so much love and play to catch up on they will surprise you beyond belief.

After years in animal welfare we have seen first hand how cats older than "kitten" age make the most playful and loving companions. Adopt Socks; not just because "he's so handsome"... he is, but he is so much more. He is sweet, affectionate, gentle and kind. He has favourite toys and loves watching birds in trees and just being out in the fresh air. He deserves a beautiful home just as much as all the other rescues.... he just hasn't met his purrfect match yet. Could it be you?
